KINESPHERIUM: DANCE SCHOOL
Materials Studio, 2011
Stimulate the full range of movement potential.
Inspired by Rudolf Laban’s theory of the structure of movement, three dance studios each accentuate one of the primary axes of movement – vertical, horizontal, and sagittal (forwards-backwards), while a fourth cubic studio balances all three axes.
The four studio volumes are hung from a concrete service core and connected by a floating wood stair suspended by steel tensionrods. The stair wraps around the triple-height vertical studio.
Lounge space connects each studio and support space on levels 2, 3, and 4, promoting social interaction between students, instructors, and administrators.
The stair tapers from its widest point at the lobby to its narrowest at the roof-top yoga room and garden, itself acting as a studio for site-specific dance: the constraints of the suspension rods and steps support movements that would be impossible in the studio spaces.
The ground level corner is anchored with step benches leading to an urban stage which in summer opens to the street, inviting performers to use the space.
