STEEL CITY MARKET HALL
Structural Design Studio, 2012
Gather in a visually and physically permeable urban plaza.
A flexible, light-filled open space is achieved through a hybridized folded plate/grid shell system.
The airy market hall enclosure is anchored at one corner by a massive service core, clad in slag brick as a an homage to Pittsburgh’s industrial past.
The wall and roof welcome morning light and shade the afternoon heat with perforated steel scrims and acoustical wood panels.
Glass doors slide open in the summer to blur the edge between inside and outside. Main entry points flow naturally from the street, drawing people down ramps and onto step-benches to interact or observe the activities of the sunken market plaza.
