SUBLIMATION: AIRPORT TERMINAL
Systems Integration Studio, 2013
Represent the transformation from earth to air.
Slow to fast, dark and dense to light and dematerialized, land-bound to airborne – this airport expresses the exciting change of state that occurs when we leave the earth for the sky.

Concept sketch of expansion, contraction in plan and section and dematerialization through density of vertical shading fins.
The sublimation occurs rhythmically across the concourse: circulation contracts in plan and section and becomes more dimly lit in the service module, directing focus to retail for departing passengers, and expressing the intake of passengers arriving in the sterile corridor.

Concourse Module: Compression occurs at intake of passengers to sterile corridor; expansion into air at gate lounge.
The space expands and brightens in the gate lounge, directing focus to the airfield and gesturing up to the sky.
Landside, passengers depart and arrive in the zone where the architecture too transitions, from the old to the new terminal: the facade dematerializes/solidifies, the roof line changes height and direction, the space expands/contracts.
The theme of this studio was systems integration, with an emphasis on reducing energy consumption, issues that I addressed in a way that was integral to the experiential concept of the project.

Systems Integration: East-West Double-Facade Load Balancing; East-West Vertical Shading Fins; and Water-to-Air Heating and Cooling.
